Профессор филологии Андрей Павлович живет тихой, ничем не примечательной жизнью. Безответный, слабохарактерный стареющий мужчина не может ни дать отпор соседу-хаму, претендующему на его жилплощадь, ни открыть свои чувства женщине, которая ему давно нравится.
Однажды, когда Андрей Павлович смиряется с мыслью, что в его никчемном существовании уже ничего не изменится и он умрет в одиночестве, в его жизни появляется молодая женщина по имени Катя.
