Главным героем этой документальной картины является Леонид Круглов, фотограф и путешественник, который решил отправиться в путешествие по просторам Арктики маршрутом самого Семена Дежнева. По сюжету «Великого северного пути» Леонид Круглов хочет повторить подвиг первопроходца и первооткрывателя, который в семнадцатом столетии отодвинул границу Российской империи далеко на Восток.
Леонид преодолел расстояние в 10 тысяч километров от Архангельска до Берингова пролива. Все это было необходимо, чтобы найти ответ на главный вопрос четырехсотлетней давности, навсегда изменивших ход российской и мировой истории.
