Андрей, член группы советских войск в Германии, получает приказ вернуться в Россию. Остается лишь купить машину и вместе с любимой женой Мариной отправиться в путь домой на автомобиле.
На одном из участков дороги супругов останавливает для проверки документов капитан милиции Мальков. В ту же секунду откуда ни возьмись появляются бандиты и нападают на пассажиров новенькой иномарки. В неравной схватке Марина погибает, а Андрея тяжело ранят.
Герой все-таки находит в себе силы добраться до ближайшего участка милиции, чтобы заявить о преступлении. Но первым, кто попадается ему на глаза, оказывается сам Мальков. Поняв, что все усилия напрасны, Андрей уходит.
