К началу ХХ века остров превратился в богатый рыбацкий поселок, а во времена СССР тут появился колхоз-миллионер с собственными электро- и метеостанцией и аэродромом. С распадом Союза колхоз пришел в упадок, и теперь поселок Чечень постепенно вымирает.
Попасть сюда можно лишь имея специальный пропуск от погранслужбы ФСБ, ибо на острове (со всеми его упадком и разрухой) базируется военный гарнизон.
